The past few days have been a blur of tissues, cozy blankets, and the comforting hum of my kettle. A stubborn cold kept me at home, giving me rare permission to slow down and take care of myself. Yesterday, feeling particularly nostalgic, I called my mom to ask for the recipe for the herbal tea she used to make when I was little. It was her magic potion, the cure-all for sniffles and coughs.
As I steeped the herbs and let the familiar aroma fill my kitchen, I felt an almost instant wave of comfort. The tea tasted just as I remembered—soothing, warm, and somehow infused with love. It made me wonder how something so simple could make such a difference.
But while I felt at ease asking my mom for remedies like tea, there are so many topics I’ve never dared to bring up with her. Topics about my body, my femininity, and the changes I’ve experienced over the years. These conversations feel like uncharted territory, cloaked in silence for reasons I can’t quite pinpoint.
And yet, these are the things we need to talk about. For instance, how many of us learned about pH balance only after experiencing uncomfortable symptoms like itching, irritation, or recurrent infections? It’s the kind of knowledge I wish came as naturally as my mom’s herbal tea recipe.
Advice Every Woman Should Know
During my downtime, I stumbled upon some advice that every woman should keep in mind:
Wear Breathable Fabrics
Synthetic materials trap moisture and heat, creating an environment where bacteria and yeast thrive. Opt for natural fabrics like bamboo or organic cotton to maintain balance and keep discomfort at bay.
Avoid Tight Clothing
Yes, those high-waisted jeans and body-hugging skirts look amazing, but they can also cause unnecessary friction and irritation. Looser clothing lets your body breathe and helps maintain harmony.
Go Commando at Night
Although some may argue that your delicate body parts don't have lungs, I would still recommend to let them breath at night. They were covered with layers and layers of tight materials all day. Letting your body restore and just be is something natural. Keep in mind, that for the longest time in history women did not wear tight (or any) underwear. So give your * a break and honor historical heritage.
Switch Detergents
Harsh chemicals in your laundry detergent can leave residue that irritates sensitive areas. Choose gentle, fragrance-free detergents that prioritize your skin’s health.
Change Immediately After Sweating
Staying in damp clothes post-workout can lead to infections. Always pack a clean change of underwear in your gym bag to stay fresh and protected.
As I let these thoughts simmer, I realized how important it is to share them—not just with friends but with future generations.
As I sip the last of my tea and feel the fog of my cold lift, I think about the conversations I want to have someday with my own daughter, should I be so lucky to have one. I want her to know it’s okay to ask questions about her body, to talk openly about her needs, and to value her well-being above all else.
Self-love isn’t just about pampering; it’s about listening to your body, understanding its needs, and giving it what it deserves. And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a warm cup of tea—or a good pair of underwear.
With love and light,
Luna
